à 7.6èPronoun-Antecedent Agreement
ä:èIn the sentences in the Example, underline the ones that
demonstrate pronoun-antecedent agreement.
âS:èThe government is ready to implement their new federal en-
#vironmental policy.ï╕A few of the contestants are present to get
#╕their bonus prizes╗.ïThe real estate industry is ready to increase
their profits.ïEach one of the players appreciates their salary
#boost.ï╕Several beavers nearby construct their dams.╗ï╕The sorority
#╕was wealthy; it always made money.╗
éS If a pronoun refers to a noun or pronoun preceding it (called
the antecedent), the pronoun will be singular if the noun or pronoun is
singular, or plural if the noun or pronoun is plural.ïIf a collective
#noun is a singular antecedent, for instance, ╖organization╗, the pronoun
that refers to that antecedent must be singular as well.ïEven though
there is more than one person in the organization, the third person
#singular word ╖organization╗ functions as one entity, one unit, and is
#thus singular.ïThe pronoun╖ they╗ or ╖their╗ would then be improper
#choices to refer to ╖organization╗. Replace them with ╖it╗ or ╖its╗--
both in the third person singular.ïNote that a prepositional phrase
between the pronoun and its antecedent does not influence the pronoun-
antecedent agreement.
1.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïThe society for the prevention of cruelty to animals is conducting
è their annual fund drive.
B)ïThe group is not ready to give up their power.
C)ïThe upper class will not transfer its property to the poor.
D)ïå
#ü ╢The upper class will not transfer its property to the poor╗ de-
#monstrates pronoun-antecedent agreement.ï╢Upper class╗ is a third per-
son singular collective noun and the antecedent of the third person
#singular possessive pronoun ╢its╗.ïIn the other sentences, the third
#person plural possessive pronoun ╖their╗ does not agree with its ante-
#cedent ╖group╗ or ╖society╗, third person singular collective nouns.ï╖
#╖Its╗ should thus replace ╖their╗ in both cases.

2.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïEvery one of the shelves is full; they can't handle any more books.
B)ïOne of the older men is picketing the steel plant because he has
è just been laid off.
C)ïThe agency has just lost their chief negotiator.
D)ïå
#ü There is pronoun-antecedent agreement in ╢One of the older men is
#╢picketing the steel plant because he has just been laid off╗.ï╢It╗, a
#third person singular pronoun, appropriately refers to ╢one╗, a third
#person indefinite pronoun.ïIn the other sentences, ╖they╗, a third per-
son plural pronoun, inappropriately refers to the third person singular
#indefinite pronoun ╖every╗, and ╖theirs╗, a third person plural posses-
sive pronoun, inappropriately refers to the third person singular col-
#lective noun ╖agency╗.ï╖It╗ should replace ╖them; its╗ should replace ╖
#╖theirs╗.

3.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïEach of the marbles has a slight hole in it.
B)ïThe company had been insuring all of their workers.
C)ïNeither of the navigators are experts in their field.
D)ïå
#ü There is pronoun-antecedent agreement in ╢Each of the marbles
#╢has a slight hole in it.ïIt╗, a third person singular pronoun, cor-
#rectly refers to the third person singular indefinite pronoun ╢each╗.
#In the other sentences, ╖they╗ inappropriately refers to ╖every╗, a
#third person singular indefinite pronoun,ïand ╖their╗ inappropriately
#refers to ╖company╗, a third person singular collective noun.ï╖It╗
#should replace ╖them; its╗ should replace ╖their╗.

4.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïNobody in the room decided to confess to their part in the robbery.
B)ïA few of the saws had their original handles.
C)ïThe firm had tight control of their budget.
D)ïå
#ü ╢A few of the saws had their original handle╗ demonstrates pro-
#noun-antecedent agreement.ï╢╗A ╢few╗, the antecedent of the third person
#plural possessive pronoun ╢their╗, is a third person plural indefinite
pronoun.ïBecause both the pronoun and antecedent are in the third per-
#son plural, they agree.ïIn the other sentences, ╖their╗ is inappropri-
atly used to refer to the third person singular indefinite pronoun
#╖nobody╗ and the third person singular collective noun ╖firm.ïIts╗
#should thus replace ╖their╗.

5.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïThe army instructed him to report to their office immediately.
B)ïNeither the butcher nor the baker had called their candlestick
è maker.
C)ïEither Suzanne or Gloria will put on her mascara.
D)ïå
#ü ╢Either Suzanne or Gloria will put on her mascara╗ demonstrates
#pronoun-antecedent agreement.ïBecause ╢Suzanne╗ and ╢Gloria╗ are sepa-
#rated by the correlative conjunction ╖either...or╗, they are considered
to be third person singular proper nouns.ïThe third person singular
#possessive pronoun ╢her╗, therefore, correctly agrees with its two
antecedents.ïIn one of the other sentences, the third person plural
#possessive pronoun ╖their╗ is used incorrectly to refer to the third
#person singular antecedent ╖army╗, a collective noun.ïIn the remaining
#sentence, ╖their╗ refers to the nouns ╖butcher╗ and ╖baker╗, but those
two antecedents are singular, not plural, because they are connected
#by the correlative conjunction ╖neither...nor.ïIts╗ thus should
#replace ╖their╗.

6.èWhich one of the following sentences demonstrates pronoun-
antecedent agreement?
A)ïMy aunt and my uncle often reflect upon their lives.
B)ïThe school wanted him to take a picture of their science lab.
C)ïThe Defense Department ordered McCarthy to stop questioning their
è integrity.
D)ïå
#ü ╢My aunt and my uncle often reflect upon their lives╗ demonstra-
#tes pronoun-antecedent agreement.ïBecause ╢aunt╗ and ╢uncle╗ are joined
#by the coordinating conjunction ╢and╗, they are considered to be third
#person plural nouns.ïAccordingly ╢their╗, a third person plural pos-
#sessive pronoun, agrees with ╢aunt╗ and ╢uncle╗, its two plural antece-
#dents.ïIn the other sentences, ╖their╗ inappropriately refers to ╖class
#and ╖Defense Department╗, both of which are singular collective nouns.
#╖Its╗ should thus replace ╖theirs╗.
